Appdate #8: Skim PDF Reader

Skim

I am a real PDF person. Not because it is a technically cool product or something, but mainly because it is very well integrated in Mac OS X and it makes exchanging documents very easy. Unfortunattely I think that reading a PDF on Mac can be a pain in the ass, so I was very happy that Melinda discovered Skim: A PDF reader and note taker. The full emersive full-screen mode is perfect when you want to read an e-book or just concentrate on the text in general. Best of all: it’s free!

Microformats on Mac

Don’t know what Microformats are? Go to the Microformats page, and read their wiki.

Now, no current browser supports Microformats, but there are plans to integrate this into Firefox 3. To get Microformats to work on a Mac for now you could use Firefox 2 with the Tails extention. But if you want to use Safari there is this nice CSS stylesheet that will help you discover Microformats from within Safari. The CSS doesn’t help you download the information but it does help you encountering any hidden Microformats.

With this CSS I managed to find quite alot of them at IMDB, Amazon, Plazes and Upcoming.

How to use the Bookmarks Bar properly

I recently started to use the Bookmarks bar in a totally different way. With the coming of tools like Del.icio.us to keep all your occasional bookmarks and Google Hompage for all the re-occuring bookmarks, I found a new use for the Bookmarks Bar.

Bar

First of all most things in the bar are BookMarklets: little snipplets of javascript that do some cool things like posting to Del.icio.us and sending YouTube videos to the TubeSock ripper. Then I made a couple of folders which keep stuff that I dont want to safe but just need to read (for research) or stuff I currently keep returning to (like my blog). By the way, note that the comics folder has the “Auto-Click” function enabled which makes all the comics open in tabs when pressed.

No A2DP in Mac OS X Tiger

For Christmas I got a nice Bluetooth 2.0 headset which supports the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) and Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP). The first profile enables your computer to send 2 channel high quality audio over a Bluetooth connection. The second profile enables audio and video control from the Bluetooth device.

As Apple includes Bluetooth 2.0 in all their customer pc’s, I obviously assumed that this would be ideal for use on my MacBook. The more surprisec I was to find out that at this moment Mac OS X Tiger has NO support for both of these profiles. As a result, when I listen to iTunes music on my nice new headset it sounds as if I’m listening to some lame AM radio station. There seems a solution underway as the new Leopard Developers Preview has A2DP support, and rumors go that the 10.4.9 release might include the profiles too. Is this a foresight of some Apple Bluetooth-audio products coming soon?
